First things first! Children are born wanting to please you and make you happy and proud! Trust in their goodness!
- Nurture Your Child's Self Esteem - Parental body language, tone of voice, and expression absorbed by kids. Praising accomplishments however small will make them feel proud. Letting children do things independently will help make them feel so strong and capable!
- Catch Kids Being Good - Catch kids doing the right thing! These statements will do more to encourage good behavior over the long run!
- Setting Limits and Staying Consistent - Establishing rules, helps kids understand expectations and develop self-control. Following through and staying consistent is a key to positive behavior support.
- Making Communication a priority - Kids want to know! They want and deserve explanations explainations as much as adults do!
- Be Flexible - Parenting styles and rules may need to change when dealing with different environments and development of the child!
- Choices! - It is essential to allow children to make choices to help create a solid positive self-esteem. Creating circumstances for children to make choices empowers a child and can reduce power struggles.
For Example: While a child may not choose their bedtime, they can choose the color of their pajamas. In this situation, the child still feels a sense of control but their choices are limited to acceptable options. Regardless of which pajamas they choose, it is still bedtime.
Challenging behavior is such a difficult part of parenting, keeping these tips in mind can help support positive behavior from children! Many strategies to include: Visuals to ease anxiety and help make concepts concrete, creating supportive environments and learning some developmentally appropriate teaching tools can help children soar through the early years.
