We are excited to announce that the Florida Association for the Education of Young Children will be bringing Fit and Fabulous by Five: Growing Up Healthy Conference to our area on December 10, 2011. It will be held at St. Ignatius Early Childhood and Life Center in Tarpon Springs. Presenters will share nutrition education, physical movement activities, recipes and other ideas for educating our children. We look forward to seeing you there.

Infant Toddler Library Celebrates it 200th Patron!!

Congratulations to Lucille Montes from R'Club Early Learning Academy at US 19! She was the 200th provider to open an account with the Infant Toddler Lending Library and Resource Room and was honored with a prize. Lucille was participating in the Cradling Literacy training series on Saturday, September 24 when she opened the account.

Coincidently, Teresa Piper from Teresa Piper's Home Daycare was also present at the training. She holds the honor of being the first provider to open an account at the new library/resource room which is located at the Early Learning Coalition of Pinellas County, Inc.

The Infant Toddler Lending Library is open to all School Readiness Providers and features materials (children's books, toys, musical instruments, etc.) for infants, toddlers and twos which can be borrowed for up to two months at a time.

The Resource Room is equipped with a laminator, book binder, resource books, Ellison Machine and much more for creating resources for teachers and children. School Readiness Providers receive 3 yards of free laminating per month just for visiting.

For more information, please contact Angela Loring, Infant/Toddler Specialist at aloring@elcpinellas.net. We hope to see you at the library soon!

Important Brain Research Reminders

Brain Research Reminder for Family Childcare Home Providers
If you have not already done so, please fill out the Brain Research Survey using Survey Monkey located on the ELC website. (This includes providers who have already taken the Brain Research training since 2005.) To complete the survey, go to www.elcpinellas.org and click on the link "Brain Research Training Survey" found on the front page. Next, click on the link that says Survey Monkey and fill out the information requested. Once the survey has been completed, you are in compliance with your School Readiness Agreement as it relates to Brain Research Training. Patty Lister will then be in contact with you to give you a special invitation to the training.

Complete the Survey Now Click Here!

Reminder for all School Readiness Programs that have filled out the Brain Research Survey or who have taken Brain Research
If the number of staff in your program has changed once you've taken the survey, do not worry. When Patty calls to inform you about registering, she will get you an updated count. New hires have one year to take Brain Research training. If you hire a new staff person after your program has already taken the class, there is plenty of time for them to meet the requirements.

If you have any questions regarding the Brain Research Training or Survey, please contact Patty Lister, Training & Development Coordinator at 727-548-1439 ext. 228 or plister@elcpinellas.net.

An updated Training Times for this quarter was posted on our website on September 1st. It includes new trainings that will be offered during the months of October, November and December. Visit our website and check out what is coming in this quarter.

Reminder: Due to liability reasons, children may not attend trainings.

SR Agreement and Core Knowledge Areas
For those who are School Readiness Providers, the signed SR agreement states that you are to attend trainings that fall in at least four of the seven Core Knowledge Areas. In order for providers to track this information more efficiently, the Core Knowledge Area for each training has been added to the training certificate.

Celebrations
If you or anyone you know has recently received their College degree (A.S. or B.S. in Early Childhood), please let us know so that we can recognize them in our newsletters.

Florida's Professional Development Initiative of Excellence Pilot Program Comes to Pinellas!

The Early Learning Coalition of Pinellas County is one of seven counties chosen to participate in the pilot program for the Professional Development Initiative of Excellence for the State of Florida. The pilot includes being part of the new State Registry, offering career advising to providers in the county and implementing trainings in the outcomes driven format by trainers who have been trained in the new format. We are excited to be chosen to participate in this great initiative so that we are better able to meet your professional development needs. More information will be announced soon.

Family Engagement: Currculum Understanding

How can we engage families in curriculum practice for young children in a way that supports children's interests and ultimate desire to know about their world?  Perhaps, setting time aside for staff and families to learn about appropriate curriculum practice for young children would enlighten our understanding and lead to greater collaborative partnerships.  We will look at curriculum trends and models, discuss participant approaches, and design a curriculum series to strengthen your community partnerships with families.

(See Area 3 - Building Family and Community Relationships)

*If there are less than 10 participants, registration will be closed October 10th and the training will be cancelled.
