Empowering Children and Families…

As early as Jasmine can remember, life was not easy.  “I am the product of generations of dysfunction, neglect, abuse and abandonment. But despite the odds against me, I was born a healthy and happy baby.”  Jasmine can recall her first childhood trauma at the age of 2, when her mother was physically abused by her step father: “I watched in terror as my mother got beaten to the ground and blood spilled on the floor.”  Years passed, the abuse escalated, and Jasmine was removed from her home and separated from her 3 siblings.  At 16, she became pregnant, dropped out of high school and obtained her GED.  She started college the following year, and that’s when she found ELC.  “If it were not for ELC I would not have been able to further my education and graduate with my B.A. in Psychology from the University of South Florida. I can recall a specific moment during my college career when I must have let my voucher expire and did not realize it. I was in a panic because I could not miss my classes or work without major consequences. I did not have any family that could help me with my daughter. I went into the ELC office, in tears, begging someone to help rectify this issue. That is when I met ReAnna. She was very sympathetic, kind and understanding to my situation.  Anytime I needed to go into the ELC offices I was always warmly greeted and any help I needed was always satisfied promptly and pleasantly.”  Today, Jasmine is an Adoptions Family Specialist–working to recruit adoptive families for children who are in need of a forever family. “I love what I do because I truly feel like I am giving back to my community and the population I came from. This opportunity would not have been possible without the wonderful ELC program geared towards individuals that need that extra helping hand. We can’t help the cards we are dealt in life, but we can choose how to play them!”  —Jasmine Randles
